That's definitely much, much nicer than what actually hapened in the book. I hate those pages, they always make me cry.

Beautifully written. What a good idea to use Riccardo's voice so we can see Amadeo's despair. I like the idea of Amadeo being 'the Master's apprentice'. That fits the era so well.
You have found a plausible alternative that would have given them both a happier future. Thank you.
Author's Response:I'm wondering if I should go on or not--I have part of a second chapter, written in Marius' voice, but I don't know if the story is best just as a short piece or whether extending it would be good. What do you think?
